Opella is a global Fast-Moving Consumer Healthcare (FMCH) leader behind trusted, household consumer health brands like Doliprane, Dulcolax, Allegra, Buscopan, and Enterogermina. Spun off from pharmaceutical giant Sanofi to operate as an independent company, Opella’s 11,000-strong global workforce spans more than 50 countries. Driven by a mission to revitalize health and wellness brands with an agile, consumer-first mindset, Opella operates under a core cultural directive: be radically simple.

Carving out an independent business from a global healthcare leader presents a unique operational challenge. As Opella transitioned away from Sanofi, leadership saw an opportunity to rethink their People & Culture strategy from the ground up. The goal was clear: pivot from high-scale, heavily regulated enterprise framework requirements to a nimble, consumer-first 'challenger mindset'.
"Sanofi is a big name, but what I found super dynamic [about the carve-out] is that you have to rethink everything. It's not just moving from L&D to L&D, it's really thinking about what processes are right for Opella, and what learning means in this new ecosystem." — Beatriz Palaric, Global Head of L&D
However, Opella inherited a heavy and complex learning infrastructure. Central L&D faced three major bottlenecks:
To support their new identity, Opella had to quickly downsize from 70+ point solutions into a single, unified learning platform. Strengthening the stand-alone Opella brand and culture would also require bringing clarity to their training offer, putting business goals at the center, and empowering their employees to learn at speed.
"We came from a history, for very good reasons, of a different company size—Sanofi has 100,000+ employees, we are 11,000...which came with a great opportunity to look at what we got from Sanofi, which was really complex with 70+ different learning systems, and make it radically simple for our employees to have one single platform." — Johanna Hummer, VP, Global People & Culture, Global Talent & Learning and Development
Opella selected 360Learning to deliver the best of both worlds: intuitive AI authoring and speed to match their challenger culture, backed by the scale and governance required for 11,000 global learners.
Rather than relying on traditional centralized course administration, Opella leveraged 360Learning to design a lean, decentralized architecture:
Opella restructured its platform around specialized Academies owned directly by business functions rather than L&D. Executive leadership nominated business leaders to oversee these Academies, ensuring training directly reflected operational goals.
To put consumer brands front and center, Opella established the Brands Corner, housing training on core products like Allegra and Enterogermina. They followed this with functional hubs including the Science Hub, Manufacturing & Supply, Finance, and a newly launched Leadership Academy.
Opella eliminated the friction of traditional instructional design so experts could share timely knowledge directly. Subject-matter experts across the business were given direct authoring access. Using 360Learning’s native AI Content Builder and AI Companion, authors could rapidly build, localize, and publish engaging courses for a global workforce across 50 countries—without needing a background in instructional design or spending months on storyboards.
"Adopting the features is super easy. The experts love the platform because it's very easy to use and they don't need any specific background in learning design." — Beatriz Palaric, Global Head of L&D
3. Building a lean, integrated ecosystem
To deliver high-quality learning across 50 countries as a lean L&D team, Opella adopted an ecosystem mindset. Rather than building every course design element in-house or juggling dozens of standalone software platforms, the team paired 360Learning with targeted ecosystem partners Aptilink and Edflex.
Aptilink serves as a vital extended team for Opella's lean L&D function—helping to format materials, design visual assets, and industrialize content creation at pace, so internal subject-matter experts can focus purely on sharing knowledge.
To complement internal courses, Edflex was integrated to curate high-quality, multi-language off-the-shelf content for global teams.
By keeping core content creation internal while leveraging Aptilink for operational scale, Opella maintains a radically simple learning architecture that scales effortlessly.
"Aptilink acts as an extended team to help us deliver at the speed we want. The content is created internally, but Aptilink helps us industrialize it...as we are a small team, they are supporting us when we don't have the bandwidth. We want to keep it simple without aggregating a lot of solutions and ending up with 35 platforms." — Beatriz Palaric, Global Head of L&D
Replacing 70+ legacy learning systems during a global corporate spin-off presented an aggressive timeline. Standard enterprise rollouts often stretch past 10 to 12 months, but Opella made a deliberate choice: accelerate the go-live date forward by six months. The driver was clear: Opella needed to exit a complex legacy environment quickly and establish a single, unified learning destination for 11,000 employees across 50+ countries.
To achieve a four-month deployment without burning out their lean L&D team, Opella prioritized speed and impact through a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) launch strategy.
Rather than attempting a massive data dump of decades-old training materials, central L&D strictly audited their content catalog, retiring outdated assets and launching with essential, high-impact topics: core brand strategies, onboarding guides, and leadership culture.
Executing this vision required intense technical and operational coordination. Behind the scenes, 360Learning’s Solution Deployment Team partnered directly with Opella’s IT and L&D stakeholders to:
For example, when the carve-out context meant direct Workday integration was 12 months plus away, the team pivoted to 360Learning’s Flat-File User Provisioning Connector—enabling fully automated provisioning and management for all 11,000 employees without delay.
“They take all the challenges we give, even if it's a topic or a timing since the very beginning. And not only accepting the challenge, but also at the same time delivering the outcome.” — Johanna Hummer, VP, Global People & Culture, Global Talent & Learning and Development
Meanwhile, to help deliver early content at pace, Opella collaborated with Aptilink to handle specialized content design and formatting. This allowed Opella’s SMEs to concentrate on translating business knowledge into the platform while the broader execution machine moved forward seamlessly.
By pairing a lean MVP scope with tight technical collaboration, Opella launched a robust, high-adoption platform in just four months—establishing a new benchmark for rapid enterprise transformation.
"I love the team, the people. It’s very open communication, at all levels. In four months, we had a very nice platform and built a real partnership with 360Learning. They are able to listen, provide solutions, and take on every challenge we give them while delivering outcomes." — Beatriz Palaric, Global Head of L&D
Opella’s MVP strategy delivered immediate, measurable adoption velocity. One year post-launch, these key performance metrics prove that simplifying the learning ecosystem drives deep engagement:
By removing technical barriers, content creation at Opella spread organically across business units:
"At the very beginning, we went to look for SMEs because they know their business...But now, we have a lot of people coming and saying, 'I love it, how can I be part of the experience?' In the past, producing a storyboard and back-and-forth changes was painful. Here, you have an idea, you use AI, you publish it. It's radically simple." — Beatriz Palaric, Global Head of L&D
With a solid foundation established, Opella is actively expanding its collaborative learning vision:
By pairing decentralized SME creation with their “radically simple” MVP strategy, Opella successfully transformed a complex corporate carve-out into a modern, agile learning organization.
"What we appreciate is the speed that allows us to have content that is relevant and not obsolete, so people don't have to wait months before seeing results. We are using AI, but most importantly we are using our capability to create [relevant content] that is bringing value to people—and to solve problems." — Beatriz Palaric, Global Head of L&D
